How are you keeping in touch with people these days? Apart from the endless schedule of video calls that is. If you’re like a few billion other people, it’s probably through a messaging app. If we look at the combined usage statistics of the titans of the bunch – WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and WeChat – these aren’t far off matching the 4.7 billion people who have access to the internet around the world. Considering the web has been with us since 1991, only WhatsApp has passed its first decade, and these figures are from before you-know-what happened, that’s not bad going. (Good morning friends)
Since COVID-19 hit, we’ve been messaging more than ever. According to Kantar, WhatsApp usage went up by 40% during lockdown, overall Facebook usage increased by 37%, while in China, use of apps like WeChat and Weibo grew by 58%. Meanwhile, Facebook’s own data suggests that messaging increased by more than 50% between the end of February and the end of March. While it’s good to keep in touch, I did ask myself just how many times it’s possible to see the same Tiger King GIF, or feel obliged to be polite about various people’s TikTok dances. I won’t shame the culprits, but you know who you are.
It’s only really since instant messaging moved to mobile that its benefits have become clear. It’s quick and easy to use, and so long as you have access to WiFi you can send all sorts of ridiculous stuff to your friends and family, free of charge, using a whole new abbreviated language. LOL. Today’s apps also mean there’s no need to put up with disjointed conversations, as you can switch between different devices using the same app, pick up where you left off and see the entire history of what was said before. I mean, I’m happy not to be reminded about Tiger King ever again, but it’s a useful feature nonetheless.
What I think is really interesting though is businesses getting on board with messaging. At a time when it can feel harder than ever to get in contact with companies on the phone or by email, messaging offers another route in, and lets us talk to the businesses we want to, the same way we do with our personal contacts.
But there’s more to it than that. If you integrate messaging into a CRM system for example, and add in an element of automation with a chatbot, you can manage queries better, standardize (or personalize) relevant responses, and be available for customers more of the time. This is really important in our new age of impatience, in which 90% of consumers consider an immediate response – 30 minutes or less – to be important or very important when they need help.
As with so many services in today’s tech environment, there are probably too many options in a fragmented market. But at the same time, sticking to just the one app is a FOMO risk – if some of your friends (or favorite brands) are Facebook Messenger fiends, while you’re a diehard WhatsApp user, you’re not going to be in the loop all the time, because each provider uses its own proprietary technology.
Which is why so many of us are using multiple apps, and – if you’re anything like me – forgetting who you last spoke to where, or which groups are on which apps. Just as well there’s that handy history to check. I’m not sure it’s quite the “hellscape” described by Vice, but it does make life a bit complicated at times.
So what does it all mean for our old friends, the SMS and MMS? Well, I’d say the MMS’s days are numbered, if not already gone. It’s just not as user friendly as the messaging experience. How many times have you been sent a fantastic picture, but can’t open it, or need to type in some special code? It’s too much like hard work – and more expensive too. Who wants bill shock just from sharing a video clip?
On the other hand, with the mental effort required to manage our messaging apps, SMS actually still looks like quite an attractive option. It doesn’t matter which phone or carrier your contacts are using – so it’s more open platform than gilded cage. SMS is still going strong because there are so many unlimited packages available, and it can offer some transactional services like sending pin codes, travel confirmations and password updates. Also, there’s an entire generation, like me, who have been using it for years and don’t always feel the need to add visual frills to our nice SHORT messages… So we’ll be clogging up the networks on New Year’s Eve for some time yet.
So until RCS, or Chat, becomes widely available in the same way, I suspect SMS will continue to thrive. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the messaging market at that point. I’ll be keeping watch.
